Building Community Capacity to Reduce Island Erosion (BVI)
Project Manager, Grant Writer and Co-Author

The purpose of the project was to raise awareness of the cumulative impacts caused by watershed development that ultimately has a negative impact on our beaches and coastal waters and how individual property owners can reduce their impact. The main activities included a one-day workshop for government agencies, developers, designers and builders to learn more about practices being used in the USVI and to discuss the obstacles we currently have in the BVI that do not allow for improved watershed management. Information collected from the various stakeholder groups at the first workshop were included in a “Best Practices Manual: A Guide for Reducing Erosion in the British Virgin Islands”, an educational and practical guide for anyone developing in the Territory.

BVI Marine Awareness Guide 1st & 2nd Editions
Project Manager, Lead Author

The purpose of a “marine awareness guide” was originally to inform yacht charter visitors about the importance of the BVI’s marine resources but turned into an important educational tool for the local community. Funding for the first edition came from Tui Marine as part of planning approval for the expansion of their marina in Road Town, Tortola. Thanks to the Governor’s Office (FCO) for support and the initial funds to create another book and funding from numerous local businesses, the second edition was created. All photos were generously donated by local photographers. Both editions can be viewed at http://www.bvimarineawareness.com. A Spanish version is in the pipeline and a third edition will be created once the BVI proposed marine protected areas are passed and local environmental legislation is updated.

Assessment & Improved Management of New and Existing Marine Protected Areas in the British Virgin Islands
Project Partner/Collaborator (Conservation & Fisheries Department Team Participant)

This project assessed the efficacy of the BVI's existing MPA's and developed ways for their improvement. The project (a) created a marine protected area (MPA) network that accurately reflects the marine and coastal habitats of the BVI by the updating of the National Geographic Information Systems (NGIS) which records habitats, protected and special areas; and (b) developed a management plan for the BVI National Parks Trust Marine Conservation Programme that incorporates adaptive management techniques throughout the system of MPAs to ensure conservation and sustainable stakeholder use.
